About Scenic Alabama

History

Scenic Alabama was founded in 1996 by volunteers who worked on Scenic Birmingham's successful campaign to ban new billboards within the city.  They built on that success to establish a statewide network of advocates and resources.

In the past ten years, more communities have come to recognize the importance of controlling signs and billboards. Most cities have sign ordinances, and many have prohibited new billboard construction. In addition, tourism has become a vital part of our state’s economy, making scenic character even more important.

Scenic Alabama, its members and supporters have helped establish a vibrant Scenic Byways program in Alabama, establish a billboard moratorium on Corridor X/I22 (later removed, unfortunately) and adopt strong sign ordinances.

Scenic Alabama is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization. Memberships and donations are tax-deductible.
